Video of live performance of "Georgia"

This is possibly the first time I appear in a live video playing double bass. The song is Hoagy Carmichael's "Georgia". As you can see, the camera angle is unusual (I think the phone camera is just placed on the stage floor) but the sound is fine. Use headphones for best sound appreciation.

The lineup is Ben van Kleef (trumpet), Pete Wilkins (drums) and me, George Urbaszek (double bass).

This performance is completely unrehearsed.

Note the absence of a harmony instrument such as piano or guitar.

George Urbaszek Double Bass

You might ask "Where is bass the lesson in this video?" And I say it's first and foremost about

  • listening to each other
  • having sufficient skills to improvise with the aid of a lead sheet/chord chart
  • being able to communicate with each other musically and sometimes verbally
  • knowing enough about standard musical formats in jazz
  • being able to adapt to the style
  • not to overplay (just because there is no harmony instrument)
